Drupal 12 is on the horizon — expected later in 2026 — and it's shaping up to be a milestone release: a move to Symfony 8, the arrival of Drupal Canvas (the new visual page builder), and a serious leap forward for the Drupal AI Initiative, including an AI assistant that can build pages from a plain-language prompt.
We're not waiting for release day to find out how it affects us. At Drup-AID, we're already tuning our development environment to land on Drupal 12 cleanly — so that when it ships, nothing is lost and everything is gained.
We're already on the road core is taking
Here's the part we're genuinely excited about: Drup-AID is built on Drupal's own AI foundation — the AI module and the AI Agents framework. That's the same foundation powering Drupal's new Canvas AI assistant. So the direction Drupal core is heading isn't a disruption for us to react to — it's the road we've been building on all along. Every step the Drupal AI Initiative takes makes Drup-AID stronger, not obsolete.
Getting ahead of the release
Rather than wait, we've already started the work:
- A Drupal 12 sandbox is up. We're running our modules and theme against the pre-release build to catch anything that needs attention long before it matters.
- We're tuning the platform — newer PHP, updated dependencies — so the upgrade path is smooth, not a scramble.
- We're testing the new AI tooling, including Canvas, side by side with our own agents.
The goal is simple: when Drupal 12 arrives, Drup-AID moves with it — no drama, no rewrite, no lost ground.

We're embracing Canvas and the new AI capabilities, and we're doing it the Drup-AID way: local-first and self-hosted. The same AI-driven, build-it-by-describing-it experience — running on your own infrastructure, with your data staying where you control it. You get the best of what Drupal 12 brings, without trading away ownership or privacy to do it.
Built with Drupal, not around it
Drup-AID is open source and built in the open. Staying aligned with Drupal core's roadmap isn't a constraint for us — it's the whole point. We'd rather move with the community than fork away from it. Drupal 12 isn't a threat to that plan; it's a tailwind.
